“If you don’t see that…”: BG coach Moors criticizes referees

Actually, the BG Göttingen wanted to celebrate a big party with their fans in the last home game of the main round – and keep the last chance for the playoffs. But nothing came of it. Ironically, relegated Gießen messed up the lavish party for the violets and their fans. What remained were disappointed faces and a lot of anger – about their own performance, but also about that of the referees.

BG coach Moors was “very, very disappointed” after the defeat. His team had a winning mentality for a long time, but this was lost at some point during the season. “There’s just something missing to win a game like that, the extra that you need,” said the coach. The defeat was difficult to accept, Moors explained. Unfortunately, the chance for the showdown on the last matchday was missed.

When asked about the referee’s performance, Moors spoke plainly. “We weren’t good today either,” he said. But he saw a clear foul by McCullum on Frey. “If you don’t see that… something like that decides a game.” Instead, the referees called Brown an unsportsmanlike foul. The BBL is of a high standard, Moors said. But what the referees would sometimes whistle, not only against the BG, that would not do justice to this level.

But, according to Moors, the BG did not perform well that evening either. Offensively the rhythm was missing, defensively one was far too careless. And the 46ers would have had the best three-pointer quota of the season. “Only Kamp was in the game today,” said Moors, praising the center’s commitment and will. Only Kamp, it seemed, realized what a chance BG had this season. But, restricted Moors: “We have no business at this level in the playoffs either.”

In a few weeks you will certainly look back on the many great moments and games, said Moors. Because they definitely existed this season. It’s not for nothing that you’ve been on a playoff spot most of the time. But now, after such a painful defeat, the coach explained: “It’s all very far away.”

Pete Strobl (Head Coach JobStairs GIESSEN 46ers): “Of course we are very happy that we won. It was a strange game, but we’re very happy and proud that our boys fought until the end. It was a difficult season for us, but we showed character to the end.”
