Philippe Clement seemed to be almost out of the street as a trainer of AS Monaco a while ago, but since then he has made an impressive comeback with his team. After no fewer than seven league victories in a row, Monaco has moved up to fourth place in the standings and only a less goal difference separates them from third place and the accompanying Champions League ticket.
On Friday, Monaco can take a new step in that direction by recording its eighth consecutive victory against outgoing champion Lille. In a sense it will be a Belgian duel, because at Lille there is also a compatriot with Amadou Onana. Clement is already very high with the talented midfielder.
“I believe very strongly in Onana’s qualities. I spoke with him at the beginning of the season to bring him to Club Brugge,” said Clement at his press conference before the match. “At that point, he had been in contact with Lille for weeks. So we didn’t get the chance to work with him, but for me he is a player who has a great future ahead of him.”
RED DEVIL
Lille eventually paid 7 million euros to snatch 20-year-old Onana away from Hamburg, where he had made his professional debut. In the youth, the captain of the Young Devils had come from Anderlecht, Zulte Waregem and Hoffenheim. He is also seen as a candidate to quickly join the selection of the Red Devils.
