Further extension of WNBA star Britney Griner’s detention in Moscow

A Russian court has extended the pre-trial detention of US basketball star Brittney Griner by another month until June 18 for drug allegations. This was reported by state media on Friday.

The two-time Olympic champion was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on February 17. The 31-year-old has been accused of carrying vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. The US government ruled that Griner was “wrongly arrested”.

Griner led Phoenix Mercury to its third WNBA title in 2014 and reached the finals again with her team in 2021. Since 2015, Griner has also played during the WNBA break at UMMC Yekaterinburg.
