FIBA withdraws Russian and Belarusian teams from upcoming international competitions

In view of the situation in Ukraine, which is not improving, the FIBA ​​Executive Committee has taken frank decisions regarding the future of the Russian and Belarus teams. The latter have been banned from future international competitions, whether in 3×3 or 5×5.

I told him from FIBA:

Following the decision taken on March 1, 2022, and confirmed by the Central Board on March 25, 2022, not to allow Russian teams and officials to participate in FIBA ​​basketball and 3×3 basketball competitions , the FIBA ​​Executive Committee today confirmed the following decisions regarding the Russian Basketball Federation (FRB) and the Belarusian Basketball Federation (FBB) for the FIBA ​​basketball competitions to be held over the next few months.

The FIBA ​​Executive Committee has taken the following decisions:

– No official FIBA ​​basketball competitions will be held in Russia or Belarus until further notice.

– RBF and BBF teams shall be removed from the following FIBA ​​competitions for national teams:

Qualifications for the FIBA ​​Basketball World Cup 2023.
Russia are dropped from Group H and Belarus are dropped from Group B of the FIBA ​​Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers, with no replacement team named. All results of both teams are void and therefore the rest of the teams in the group qualify for the second qualifying round with 4 games played. In order to evenly rank the teams in these two groups (H and G; A and B), matches in the first round against the last ranked teams in group G and group A will not be taken into account for the classification in groups L and I.

FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022
Russia have been withdrawn from the FIBA ​​U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 which will take place in Hungary from July 9-17. The substitute team is Serbia, second in Group B of the FIBA ​​U16 European Women’s Challenger 2021 and only second team in a group that did not qualify (qualification in this group was given to the host, Hungary, who finished third).

FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022
Russia is withdrawn from the FIBA ​​Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 which will take place in Australia from September 22 to October 1. The replacement team is Puerto Rico, as decided last March given the circumstances surrounding the FIBA ​​Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 Qualifying Tournament in Washington DC

– RBF and BBF teams shall be removed from the following FIBA ​​3×3 National Team competitions:

FIBA 3×3 World Cup 2022
Russia is withdrawn from the FIBA ​​3×3 World Cup. The following teams, Israel for women and Slovenia for men, will be invited to participate.

FIBA Nations League 3×3 U23 2022
Russia is withdrawn from the FIBA ​​3×3 U23 Nations League. There will be no replacement team.

FIBA Europe Cup 3×3 (Qualifying) 2022
Belarus is withdrawn from the FIBA ​​3×3 Europe Cup 2022 qualifiers. There will be no replacement team.
Russia is withdrawn from the FIBA ​​3×3 Europe Cup 2022. Replacement teams will qualify in the FIBA ​​3×3 Europe Cup 2022 Qualifier.

FIBA 3×3 U17 Europe Cup Qualifiers 2022
Belarus have been withdrawn from the FIBA ​​3×3 U17 Europe Cup Qualifiers 2022. There will be no replacement team.

FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup 2022
Belarus is withdrawn from the FIBA ​​3×3 U18 Basketball World Cup 2022. The following teams, Belgium for women and Lithuania for men, will be invited to participate.

– Teams representing Russian or Belarusian clubs or cities, as well as Russian and Belarusian players are not allowed to register and qualifications will not be held in Russia or Belarus for the following FIBA ​​3×3 events ProCircuit:

FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series

The FIBA ​​European Zone Board of Directors and the Basketball Champions League Board of Directors have been asked to make the corresponding decisions for the respective national team and club competitions, which will be communicated in the next days.
