F1 qualification will undergo experimental changes – Motorsports – Sportacentrs.com

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) is working to reduce the number of tire kits available to each pilot per stage in the future. Currently, the rider can count on 13 sets of dry tires, but the intention is to reduce their number to 11.

In order to test how it works in real life, already in the 2023 season, only 11 sets of tires will be given to each pilot in two stages. It is not known at what stages this will be the case, but it has been announced that this will change the conditions for qualifying tires. At the moment, pilots are free to choose which tires to start in any of the qualifying rounds, while in these two stages the Q1 session will have to start with hard tires, Q2 will have medium tires, but in Q3 or the fight for the first ten starting places will be with soft tires only. The conditions will be lifted if the track is wet.

Currently, the rules provide drivers with eight sets of soft tires, three sets of medium tires and two sets of hard tires for the weekend (including an extra set of soft tires for those taking part in Q3). There will be four sets of soft, four medium and three hard tires in the two experimental phases.
