First there were the frightening minutes after the fall of Julian Alaphilippe. The images show how sports directors Geert Van Bondt and Klaas Lodewyck try to keep a cool head despite the great uncertainty about the world champion (from minute 8.30).
Even after Remco Evenepoel’s decisive attack, the heart rate monitor increases drastically for the entire team. In the last kilometers team mate Tim Declercq is pacing the line: “I have never been so nervous. This is the victory I will enjoy the most.”
The discharge is also great for the rest. A caretaker yells, “Now that little one is done laughing!” and Geert Van Bondt, among others, bursts into tears (from minute 17).
Afterwards, the team celebrates the victory together in a hotel. There, Tim Declercq reminds his colleague of a deal they closed the day before (minute 24.40).
“Do you remember our handshake?” he asks with a big smile. “I said I would buy him a piano”, Evenepoel grins.
