Denis Shapovalov scolds fans in Rome during game against Lorenzo Sonego: “Shut up!”

Denis Shapovalov looked closely to check a imprint after his second serve. The ball was initially passed by the linesman before chair umpire Richard Haigh decided otherwise by overruling.

Shapovalov didn’t like it at all.

The 23-year-old climbed over the net and thus disobeyed the rules. “Denis, listen, because you crossed the net, you get another rule violation,” Haigh explained to the world number 16. “No, it’s stupid. It’s so unfair. Call the supervisor, I showed you the marking,” countered Shapovalov.

The supervisor, however, saw the whole thing like the referee. The spectators acknowledged the action with boos, which also went against the grain of Shapovalov. “Shut up,” the Canadian snapped at the audience – which resulted in a game penalty and gave Sonego a 5-3 lead in the second set.

In the end, however, Shapovalov celebrated, winning the game 7:6 (7:5), 3:6 and 6:3 after 3:11 hours.
