NBA: Adreian Payne, former NBA player, shot dead at 31

ADreian Payne, a 31-year-old former NBA player, was shot to death for reasons still unknown in the early hours of Monday on the streets of Orlando. The event occurred at 1.37 in the morning and the police have already arrested a 29-year-old suspect. The first to announce the sad news was his ex-partner Jared Sullinger.

Payne, 2.08 meters, rose to fame playing for Michigan State University, with which he became a star. His performance caused him to be selected fifteenth in the 2014 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. However, he could not adapt to the American League. He was sent to the G League several times and could only play 107 games spread over four seasons and three teams, since he also played for the Wolves and the Magic. His career averages were 4.0 points and 2.9 rebounds. He left Orlando in a bad way, because he was cut as a result of a sexual harassment scandal that occurred in 2010 at Michigan State University

After leaving the NBA in 2018, he joined Xavi Pascual’s Panathinaikos, where he returned the following season after passing through the Chinese League. Later he signed for ASVEL Villeurbanne, where he played a promising 19-20 season. However, it was not enough for him to find good destinations and in recent campaigns he had played in Turkey and his last destination was Juventus Utena this year. In the Lithuanian competition he averaged 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds.

On both sides of the Atlantic there have been messages of condolences. Michigan State University, ASVEL Villeurbanne or Walter Tavares, his former teammate in the Hawks, have been some of those who have said goodbye to Payne on social networks.
