Talk about a bomb. According to Eddy Snelders, Christian Eriksen is high on the wish list of Antwerp FC, but they should not crow too early on the Bosuil. The Danish midfielder is currently doing very well in the Premier League and in addition, financially, he is simply unattainable for The Great Old. Since his cardiac arrest in the summer of 2021, Eriksen has experienced an impressive sporting evolution at Brentford FC and in that way he is certainly not a bacon for the Antwerp mouth.

THE OVERMARS NETWORK

The link for the remarkable rumors between Christian Eriksen and Antwerp FC is not far to seek: Marc Overmars. The Dutchman worked at Ajax – briefly but still successfully – with Eriksen, and Overmars even completed his top transfer (14.15 million euros) to Tottenham in 2013. The new technical director is a master at maintaining his network, as witnessed by the presence of Toby Alderweireld at the Bosuil last weekend. You never know in the football world…

For the time being, no concrete approaches have been sought between Antwerp FC and Toby Alderweireld, but the file around Christian Eriksen would have already taken shape. “It’s an interesting road that is being traveled. There is talk that that possibility would be effective,” said Eddy Snelders in the podcast Sjotcast van The newspapaer† It remains to be seen how realistic that interesting path is, because Eriksen is and remains a world-class player. He still proves that today in the Premier League, where he has been back to a top level since February.

The story of Christian Eriksen is well known to everyone. The 30-year-old went into cardiac arrest in the EURO 2020 group match against Denmark against Finland, after which he was immediately resuscitated and thankfully regained consciousness. In order not to jeopardize his future and career as a professional football player by cardiac arrhythmias, the then Internazionale player had an internal defibrillator installed. This is a device that can deliver an electric shock to the heart in the event of a life-threatening heart rhythm disorder.

The only problem is that such a device is not allowed in Italian football, so Christian Eriksen and Internazionale end the collaboration by mutual agreement. On the very last day of the winter mercato, Brentford finally threw him the lifeline. And Brentford and Eriksen have absolutely not regretted that. The internal defibrillator causes Eriksen absolutely no trouble on the football field and in a few months he grew back into an absolute trendsetter in the Premier League.

“I trust the doctors. I wouldn’t be standing here if I didn’t know for sure that I’m able to return without bad things happening. I’ve been very lucky with the doctors and the diagnosis. Everything is fine so I can start playing again,” said Christian Eriksen at the end of March, after being called up to the Danish national team for the first time since his cardiac arrest. “I have been working on my recovery every day since then. It’s going really well and it also helps when some time has passed,” said Eriksen.

HOME IN BRENTFORD

Christian Eriksen is back at top level at Brentford FC but his future at Community Stadium is highly uncertain, as the 30-year-old signed a short contract on January 31 until June 30. But it depends on the club, Eriksen will also play at Brentford next season. “I am very pleased that he is playing for us,” said coach Thomas Frank about Eriksen. “It’s no secret that we want to continue with him next season.” And that makes sense.

Christian Eriksen has become one of the Premier League’s best players in his position in just a few months, as he is already in the top ten for offensive regularity, verticality and number of key passes sent per game. In addition, he is the number two in the number of passes sent to the final third of the field and also the number three in the creation of opportunities for his teammates. It should be clear: Eriksen is back!

Christian Eriksen is happy at Brentford, because he feels completely at home at that club. Thomas Frank was still training him with Denmark’s U17, and it was the coach who called Eriksen over Christmas to come to Brentford. In addition, he finds many Danish fellow internationals such as Mathias Jensen, Mathias Jorgensen and Jonas Lossl. Mads Roerslev and Mads Bech Sorensen are also fellow countrymen of Eriksen. In terms of atmosphere and conviviality, it is good for him there.

UNTAKEN FOR ANTWERP

Christian Eriksen has not yet spoken out about his expiring contract with Brentford FC, but he is making no secret of his desire to continue playing football in England. That means a big damper for Antwerp FC, which may be wealthy at the level of the Jupiler Pro League, but in terms of finances, money, status and reputation it can never compete with the clubs from the Premier League.

Moreover, the transfer of Christian Eriksen would not be ‘free’, because Antwerp will always have to make a substantial contribution to be able to lure him to de Bosuil with an attractive contract. For example, at Internazionale he earned 11 million euros a year, although his salary at Brentford is admittedly of a lower level. Eriksen, meanwhile, is picking up again with his best football level – in the best competition in the world – as a result of which his market value as a free player increases enormously and therefore becomes almost unattainable for The Great Old.
