RB Leipzig beats SC Freiburg in the final and wins the DFB Cup. It is the first title for the Saxons in their still very young history. CEO Oliver Mintzlaff thinks back to the beginnings of the club.
Willi Orban took three steps and sank the penalty safely in the right corner. That was all the RB Leipzig defender could do. Orban wanted to turn away jubilantly, but was slowed down by a calf cramp. Even before that, the people of Leipzig were repeatedly plagued by cramps. The big fight in the DFB Cup final was worth it – Leipzig won the final against SC Freiburg 5:3 on penalties and won the first title in its very limited history.
“We played 60 minutes with ten men and played a miserable first half. It’s unbelievable that it worked out,” said Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. It is the first title in the short history of the club: “We have to stop and see what we have achieved in the past 13 years. Today we will really let it rip, because this is a historic evening for us tonight.”
Due to a tragic incident after the game, Leipzig had to wait until they could really let it rip. On the edge of the field, a photographer had to be treated by an emergency doctor. When the all-clear was given, the people of Leipzig were finally able to accept the trophy.
Leipzig celebrates with the fans on Sunday
“It’s insane to win like that. That proves that we have mentality. I’m proud of the team. We have to celebrate the first title in the club’s history,” said midfielder Emil Forsberg.
Leipzig will celebrate the title with its fans on Sunday. After the entry in the city’s Golden Book in the Old Town Hall, the cup winner drives an open truck to the festival grounds in front of the Red Bull Arena. The most successful season in the club’s 13-year history will then be celebrated there in the afternoon.
“It was a very emotional game, so you need a few days to process it. I’m incredibly proud of the players,” said coach Domenico Tedesco.
