Wolfsburg veteran Maximilian Arnold has confirmed that Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern once expressed an interest in him.

Maximilian Arnold from VfL Wolfsburg revealed in an interview that Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich were once interested in him. “Yes, there was contact, but there were never any concrete negotiations,” said the 27-year-old Sports Illustrated to the corresponding question: “Uli Hoeneß did not call me personally, but there were phone calls with my advisor.”

Arnold has been under contract in Wolfsburg since 2009 and is therefore one of the most loyal professionals in the Bundesliga. According to his own statement, this will not change anytime soon: “I feel good in Wolfsburg. VfL is not just any club for me,” said the midfielder, who had switched from Dynamo Dresden to the youth team at the time.

“Of course I’ve also looked left and right. I’m someone who reflects on a lot of things after each season,” said Arnold, who only extended his contract until 2026 in February last year: “Then I sit down with my family and together with my adviser and see how things are developing, how satisfied I am and how things will continue.”

This attitude was also the reason why the top clubs in the Bundesliga did not go beyond casual contact: “For me, things always have to make sense. I’m a guy who doesn’t have to put honey around his mouth,” says Arnold, who added: “I only believe in it when I have everything in front of me in black and white. Only then do I deal with it.”
