CHICAGO (AP) — Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run homer, Yoshi Tsutsugo had two more runs at the plate with a double and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied from behind to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 Thursday night.
The Pirates bounced back from a three-game series sweep in Milwaukee thanks to nine hits to start a four-game series at the Cubs’ home.
Pittsburgh starter Bryce Wilson allowed Rafael Ortega’s leadoff single and then gave up three straight walks. Jonathan Villar added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead 2-0 and Seiya Suzuki drove in a ground run in the second inning to make it 3-0.
Vogelbach homered in the third set and Tsutsugo’s brace made it 4-3. That forced Cubs manager David Ross to retire reliever Ethan Roberts (0-1) after two-thirds of an inning in which he gave up two earned runs, two hits and two walks and two strikeouts.
Wil Crowe (1-0) struck out five Cubs in 2 1/3 innings of relief, giving up just one hit for the win.
For the Pirates, Puerto Rican Roberto Pérez 3-1 with a run scored.
For the Cubs, Venezuelans Willson Contreras 3-1 with a run scored; Rafael Ortega 4-1 with a run scored. Dominican Jonathan Villar 3-0 with an RBI.
