Viergever: “I should have kicked the ball out”

The cloverleaf passed the character test throughout the second half of the season. The most recent proof came from the well-deserved 1-1 draw at Union Berlin on Friday evening in game one after the relegation and the announcement that coach Stefan Leitl was leaving at the end of the season.

“We took too much risk at that moment”: Nick Viergever watches the 1-1 draw.

Leitl was satisfied with his team’s performance after the game: “We were able to keep the tension high during the week, were really looking forward to the game here and played one of our best first halves.” If this season had only started with the second half of the season, the Fürth would be in the middle of a relegation battle and would have had every chance. Before the remaining games of the 32nd match day, they occupy 15th place in the second half table with 13 points.

“Unfortunately, the risk assessment was not optimal”

However, the subjunctive doesn’t help, and the 1:1 showed very well why it wasn’t enough in the end. In addition to Branimir Hrgota’s ninth goal of the season, SpVgg should have scored a second or third goal. Instead, she gave Union the compensation. “I should have kicked the ball out. We took too much risk at the moment,” Nick Viergever admitted his “simple mistake” before the 1-1 draw. However, goalkeeper Anders Linde is also partly to blame, who should not have alluded to Viergever in this pressing moment at Union. “Unfortunately, like a week ago against Leverkusen, the risk assessment wasn’t optimal. We have to realize that we sometimes throw in a long ball,” Leitl analyzed and criticized the fateful scene in the 72nd minute.

Nevertheless, from Fürth’s point of view, the positive things outweighed the old forester’s. The competition knows that the bottom of the table cannot be left hanging. Leitl’s team is expecting Borussia Dortmund for their last home game next Saturday, before the end of the season at FC Augsburg. This will be the last chance to say goodbye after twelve defeats and four draws with at least one away win. And Fürth still needs a three-pointer to get 21 points like in 2012/13 in the first Bundesliga attempt.
