“Tie permanence as soon as possible is already a matter of image”

He went through the subsidiary before being a player, captain and even sports director of Sporting. Raúl Lozano Marcos (Salamanca, 1977) now works as a soccer player agent at the Interstar company, in which he controls everything from juniors to professional soccer players. Based in Gijón and the father of a promising red-and-white player – his son plays for Sporting’s youth team – Martí’s men visit Almería on Monday, a place he knows well. There he played three years and was also sports director.

– Shall we start with the derby?

–Wherever you want.

–Look at this photo (the image of the celebration of his goal at the Tartiere).

-It is one of the most beautiful memories I have in football. It was a derby to which we arrived in a hurry, and they, at a good time. The field, overflowing. The feeling of scoring a goal at the Tartiere…

-How did you feel in the last derby?

– What it leaves you is sorrow. In sports it was a match from power to power. Anyone could take it and even a tie would have been the fairest. As for the rest, the images were not ideal, neither for football nor for Asturias.

-Are you one of those who have to know how to win and lose?

-That’s a set phrase. That Oviedo could have celebrated it quietly in the locker room? Sure, but the images that were seen are not suitable for Sporting.

-You are temperamental, you ended up facing a Zaragoza coach at El Molinón in 2014, when you were sports director.

-The day of Zaragoza I went down to separate and in the end words were said and… yes, I’m hot. That day I was wrong. I know what will now go through the heads of the Sporting players who made those mistakes against Oviedo. It will serve as learning.

–How do you manage such a complicated week inside?

-It’s complicated for everyone, but even more so for veterans. You have to focus on trying to prevent it from happening again. Monday’s game is vital to leave behind all the qualifying angst and for people to forget about the derby.

– Is the permanence on track?

-The difference in points is considerable. It is also different from previous seasons, because those at the bottom are barely adding, when it is normal that in the final stretch they even add more than those at the top. I think we’re going to have a quiet ending.

–Sporting can play in Almería four points from relegation if Amorebieta wins this Saturday.

-You have to go out and win every game. It’s clear. Tying permanence as soon as possible is already a matter of image. For peace of mind and, above all, for doing it on their own merits, not because of the demerits of their rivals. With a difference of four points, they can start to shake their legs.

–How did you get to Almería?

-The club had just been promoted to Second after many years (2003). They were three very good seasons. The club grew and we were about to be promoted in the third year. They have followed a progression until today. I signed because Casuco was there and they came looking for me. I had two years left on my contract at Sporting, both parties saw a good deal and I needed a change.

–Now it looks like a new club, with a change of ownership included. Is there anything left of his stage?

-Utileros, press officer… I went back there in 2017 because the president called me in February. The situation was very complicated. The team was almost relegated and there was nothing to do but sign the coach. We signed Ramis. The team was saved. We had a great season finale.

What match do you expect on Monday?

-Complicated, but like most in Second. Sporting is going to find the field full. Almería has a great project, powerful economically. The quarry is working well and the facilities have been expanded. If it goes up to First Division it will be an important team.

– Do you miss the sports management?

-Everything has its pros and cons. The sports management, on a day-to-day basis, has many problems. It is more stressful than the agent facet.

Will you return to that role?

-You never know. You can never say of this water I will not drink. Now I am happy in a very strong company, but in football everything is changing.

–How do you assess the work that is being done in the sports management of Sporting?

-Both Javi (Rico) and Noé (Calleja) have done a good job, but the Second is complicated. We all thought that the signings were the right ones, but the competition has told you no. We’ll see what happens.

-The team is experiencing its worst season after returning to the Second Division. What do you think will happen?

– You have to be in the day to day. From the outside everyone will have their opinion. The economic factor also influences. If the president trusts Javi (Rico) it will be for a reason. The results are the ones that have to decide.

-How is your day to day?

-Our company has many players at a professional level, but it also gives a lot of importance to young people. I deal with the area of Asturias, Castilla y León, Cantabria and Galicia. I observe from fry to professional footballers.

-Is the Oviedo youth team gaining ground over Sporting’s?

–They fight for the same players. When Oviedo was in the Third Division, Sporting had priority, but now the issue has become somewhat equal. They compete very evenly with each other.

– Have the children who want to be footballers changed compared to their time?

They have changed, like life. In this sport, infrastructure has been won, but street football has been lost. Now many prefer to be with the mobile phone.
