The art of signing a record twice in less than a year

GIRONAIf in May of last year they had asked any Girona fan what was the ceiling of consecutive victories for the team in the professional category, the answer was simple. At most, Girona had won five games in a row. A couple of times, of course. In modern times, the record was reached in the 2010-11 season, with Raül Agné, José and Àngel Martínez or Jandro Castro. The pioneering squad, however, dates back to the early 1940s, with Curta, Farró, Colomer, Trias and Ferrer. Even though no one remembers it, they did too.

But now, less than a year later, the answer has changed. Francisco Rodríguez made it possible, placing his Girona at the top of the statistics with seven consecutive victories. Rivals fell one after another as Montilivi’s hopes grew. He was a great coach, Francisco, but he was unlucky: he lost both finals of play-off which he disputed before leaving the club with a heart injury.

In the summer it was Michel who took the reins. And, if it weren’t for Francisco, it would be the name of the Madrid man who would head the list of victories. Aspiring everything, Girona has five consecutive victories, against Oviedo (2-1), Las Palmas (1-3), Ibiza (5-1), Almeria (0-1) and Málaga (1-0). This Sunday he will be looking for his sixth in Zaragoza (4pm, #Vamos). With a fortune in La Romareda, where they will be accompanied by a white-and-red wave that no longer plans to leave the team alone (it has sold out the nearly 600 tickets that were in the visiting area), you will only have one victory to tie with his predecessor.

9-point cut on direct ascent

The positive dynamics in which Girona lives have allowed to cut points with the high zone of the classification of forceful way. Before the streak, Girona were sixth 15 points behind the direct ascent and are now fourth at 6; that is, they have cut 9 points. If we individualize it, he has scored 7 points in Eibar (the leader of the category), 6 in Valladolid (second place and last place that allows you to go up without qualifying), 10 in Almeria (third), 11 in Tenerife (fifth), 5 in Oviedo (sixth) and 12 in Ponferradina (seventh and first place that does not give the right to play-off).

With eight days to go until the end of the championship, Michel’s men refuse to give up. Having found emotional stability, Girona has shown that it has enough resources to face the final sprint of the League with guarantees. In Zaragoza, the return of Santi Bueno and Aleix Garcia will send them directly to a title in which the only doubt is who will occupy the position of center forward: or a bust in a row or Cristhian Stuani. Blessed is the problem.
