MLB: Classification of the World Baseball Classic would be in Panama

After the office of Major League Baseball reached an agreement with the Players Association of the MLB for the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, one of the main baseball events resumed its course and, almost five months after the first stage, sources indicated that the qualifier of the World Baseball Classic 2023 would at the Rod Carew Stadium in Panama.

According to David Salayandía of Panama’s TV Max, the World Classic will take its qualifying round at Rod Carew National Stadium from September 28 to October 5, 2022event in which 12 national teams would be participating looking for four tickets to the maximum event in world baseball.

For the 2013 and 2017 editions, the event took a portion of its qualifier to the Rod Carew. On both occasions, the qualifier was played at four different venues.

Originally, qualification was scheduled to be played in two stages between March 13 and 25, 2020 at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, Arizona, a complex that once served as the home of the Chicago White Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks for their respective Major League preseason games.

The health emergency around the world forced the organizing committee to cancel the games when the matches were about to start.

These countries would play the Classification of the World Classic 2023

  • Britain
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • Czech Republic
  • Panama
  • Spain

Given the expansion of teams in the competition, the 16 participants in the 2017 edition of the World Classic got their ticket automatically.

It is not yet known if all 12 teams will play the qualifier.

The agreement between the Major Leagues and the Players Association allowed the final phase of the championship to be scheduled for 2023 and 2026, the first time this competition will be played since 2017.
