Maradona’s “God’s Hand” match shirt likely to sell for record amount – Football – Apollo.lv – Sports

One of the goals of the game in Mexico was the infamous “hand of God” goal.

The blue shirt with the tenth number since the end of the game belongs to the opponent’s midfielder Steve Hodge, who exchanged shirts with Maradon after losing England 1: 2.

The fight in the quarterfinals was especially important for Argentina, as it took place only four years after the defeat in the Falklands War.

The match in the history of Mexico’s Estadio Azteca has expanded with two Maradona goals – one infamous and one outstanding.

The first was scored in the 51st minute when Hodge intercepted the pass on the edge of England’s penalty area and beat it back to goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

Maradona, running into the penalty area, jumped after the ball together with the England goalkeeper and hit the ball into the net, reaching 1: 0.

The players of England now seemed to think the job was done and acted more defensively, just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle.

Maradona later explained the controversial episode, saying that the gate was scored “a little with Maradon’s head, a little with God’s hand.”

After four minutes, Maradona’s shot went over the bar.

After receiving the ball on his side of the field, Maradona left five English defenders behind before sending the ball past Shilton, and his “goal” was named the “goal of the century” in a 2002 FIFA poll.

Argentina also won the final, lifting the World Cup for the second time in eight years, and Maradona, who was already a superstar, was worshiped in her homeland.

After his death due to a heart attack in 2020, three days of mourning were declared in Argentina.

Hodge, whose autobiography is titled “The Man in the Maradon Shirt,” has lent the shirt for the past 20 years to a public display at the Manchester National Football Museum.

In a statement to AFP, Sotheby’s said it would be exhibiting its shirt in London during an online auction scheduled for April 20th to May 4th.

The winner of the auction will decide whether the shirt will continue to be available to the public.

Sotheby’s reports that “the list of people or organizations that might want to get the item is long.”

Bidding for the Maradon shirt will start with four million pounds (4.8 million euros).

The record for the shirt worn in the game was reached in 2019, the American baseball player “Baby” Ruth or George Herman Ruth’s shirt for the Yankees in New York was paid 5.6 million US dollars (5.1 million euros).

Last year, the shirt worn by Brooklyn Dodgers star Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the Premier League (MLB), was sold for $ 4.2 million (€ 3.8 million).
