La Jornada Maya – Deaf Olympic Games in Brazil: 45 athletes represent Mexico

For the first time, the Mexican delegation that will travel to the Deaflympics Games will participate in six disciplines and there will be 45 athletes representing the country in the sports fair that begins on May 1.

The National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (Conade) reported that the 24th edition of the Deaflympics Games will be held in Brazil and athletes specializing in athletics, volleyball, soccer, taekwondo, karate and judo will participate.

The athletes are concentrated at the National Center for the Development of Sports Talents and High Performance (CNAR), in Mexico City, where they are preparing to travel to Caxias do Sul, Brazil.

From May 1 to 15, the delegation of 45 Mexican athletes will attend the international competition.

As of April 26, the trips to Brazil will begin.

“The opening of the Games will be on May 1, many disciplines participate worldwide, the expectations for Mexico are positive, Isabel Huitrón will defend her title at Samsun 2017 and we hope that our teams from the other disciplines will also do well in their competitions, they are really looking forward to it and we hope they achieve a good result”, commented Eugenia Rivera Lara, president of the Mexican Federation of Sports for the Deaf.

Before this edition, Mexico had only participated in the Deaflympic Games with karate, women’s volleyball, athletics, taekwondo and judo. However, this year debuts men’s volleyball and soccer.

In total, 17 soccer teams, 17 volleyball teams, five taekwondo teams, three karate teams, two athletics teams and one judo athlete will attend.
