Goodbye to a historical figure of Spanish basketball. Javier Imbroda dies at the age of 61

Javier Ibroda He passed away this Sunday at the age of 61 (1961-2022). The former Andalusian Minister of Education and Sports has not been able to overcome a long and hard battle against prostate cancer, which was diagnosed in 2017.

Imbroda was a key figure in Spanish basketball. For more than a decade he laid the foundations for the best Unicaja, which he led to the ACB runner-up position in 1999.

As coach of Spain he achieved the bronze medal at the European Championships in Turkey in 2001. And in the 2002 World Cup in Indianapolis, he achieved the milestone of winning the United States in an official match. The selection would finish that championship in 5th position.

A long career that began at the Barcelona ’92 Olympic Games, forming part of the coaching staff, and later directing more than 600 games in the ACB for 17 seasons. He trained Mayoral Maristas, Unicaja de Málaga, Caja San Fernando, Real Madrid, Grupo Capitol and Vive Menorca.

After overcoming cancer, he decided to share his experience by getting involved in different projects with sport as the axis, creating the Javier Imbroda Foundation, which serves children daily with sport as a tool for inclusion and which he set up with his own resources, without aid or public subsidies.

Just over a month ago, Imbroda was honored at the Copa del Rey in Granada. The entire pavilion stood up to pay tribute to him.
