Hartenstein is the son of the former German basketball pro and current coach Florian Hartenstein and was born in the USA. After studying at the University of Oregon, he gained a foothold in the German professional leagues as a center and power forward and moved back to the USA in 2017. After NBA stints with the Houston Rockets, the Denver Nuggets and the Cleveland Cavaliers, Hartenstein has been playing for the Los Angeles Clippers since 2021.
