Gerard Pique at the heart of a scandal after the leak of telephone exchanges with the president of the Spanish federation

Gérard Piqué is not only a central defender at FC Barcelona and Shakira’s companion. Having become a real businessman even before the end of his playing career, he notably runs the company Kosmos, which specializes in sports events and owns FC Andorra, a third division club.

Since the beginning of the week, the Spanish media El Confidencial has unveiled several audio recordings in which we hear Pique and Luis Rubiales, the president of the RFEF, having discussions that they would undoubtedly have preferred to keep to themselves. We learn in particular that Kosmos received a commission of 24 million euros for the organization of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Pique can also be heard asking to be put in touch with Spain’s Under-21s coach Luis de la Fuente to participate in the Tokyo Games. “You have to do this for me, Rubi, you have to do this for me. I’m so excited to play in the Olympics,” said the defender in particular, before ensuring that this arrangement would remain secret.

The icing on the cake: Pique had also lobbied for FC Andorra to be placed in the easiest group in the Spanish third division, which he ultimately did not obtain. “You have the power to send us anywhere. The group with the teams from La Rioja, Navarre, Aragon or the Basque Country would be the best for us” had pleaded Pique, in vain.

For his part, Luis Rubiales denied and described as “lies” all this information revealed by El Confidencial. Stating that if Kosmos had received a commission, it came from Saudi Arabia and not from the Spanish Federation.
