Former American golfer Shirley Spork has died

Shirley Spork became a professional golfer while teaching at a Detroit public school in 1950. That year, she signed the original LPGA charter alongside twelve other women such as Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Patty Berg. Marlene Hagge is today the only surviving founder. This charter allowed women to have access to a professional golf circuit.

A life as a committed golfer

The American took second place in the 1962 LPGA Championship. A passionate teacher and coach, she will be inducted – along with other founding women – into the LPGA Hall of Fame this year.. “To enter the LPGA Hall of Fame is the highest honor in our profession, so I climbed the ladder and arrived at the top”Shirley Spork said in a press release last month.
