Canadian full-back Alphonso Davies honored by CONCACAF

Alphonso Davies has been named CONCACAF Player of the Year for 2021.

The 21-year-old Davies was chosen from six finalists that included national teammate Jonathan David, also nominated for the title.

The winner is chosen by a ballot conducted among coaches, captains, the media and supporters of the region concerned.

“I am honored to receive this title considering that CONCACAF brings together many good players. I have to give credit to everyone who helped me on my journey. The level of play in CONCACAF is very high, there is a lot of passion on the pitch,” Davies said in response to the announcement.

The Canadian side participated in the first qualification of the country in 36 years of history. However, he was unable to join his teammates for the last matches in 2022 due to symptoms of mild myocarditis which appeared following a Covid-19 infection. Canada went 3-0-4 in Davies’ seven games.

“2021 has been a long year for me, but also for the Canadian squad. We are happy with the journey to qualify for the World Cup. Head coach John Herman brought all the players together and convinced us that we could achieve our goal. With a motivating coach, anything is possible. In Qatar, we want to go as far as possible and who knows, maybe win the World Cup. »

Davies had quite a year in 2021, notably winning the Bundesliga title and the UEFA Champions League in the colors of Bayern Munich.

On the women’s side, American Crystal Dunn took home the title, finishing ahead of an all-Canadian trio of Jessie Fleming, Stephanie Labbé and Christine Sinclair.
