Bundesliga: 20 million invested! Leipzig’s crazy goalkeeper carousel – Bundesliga

The matter has actually been clear for six years: Peter Gulacsi (31) is the undisputed number 1 of the Bulls. And behind them all the newly brought in goalkeepers are gritting their teeth in rows.

Now there is another one in the starting blocks. Belgium talent Maarten Vandevoordt (20 / Genk) will only switch to RB in 2024. According to BILD information, it costs a whopping 10 million euros. At the club, they have a lot of confidence in the U21 national player: As Gulacsi’s successor, he should be serious competition for him in two years’ time when the Hungarian only has one year left on his contract. Like so many others before…

Crazy: RB has paid almost 20 million euros for (backup) goalkeepers since they were promoted to the Bundesliga.

► 2016: Marius Müller (28/now Lucerne) comes from Kaiserslautern for 1.7 million euros.

► 2017: RB pays 5 million euros to Bern for Yvon Mvogo (27 / loan Eindhoven).

► 2019: Philipp Tschauner (36, ends his career in the summer) moves here from Hanover for 400,000 euros. Including additional payments, it has already cost around 1 million euros so far.

► 2020: Leipzig transfers 2.5 million euros to UD Las Palmas for Spain talent Josep Martinez (23).

They all have one thing in common: no one got beyond the role of bench press.

And that’s why there’s a traffic jam on the position again this summer: As of now, RB has six keeper under contract in July. In addition to Gulacsi and Martinez (to be loaned out), Janis Blaswich (30 / Heracles Almelo), who is only signed on a free transfer, as well as the returnees on loan Mvogo (to be sold), Tim Schreiber (19 / HFC loan expires) and youth keeper Fabian Eutinger (18).

Gulacsi, Blaswich and Eutinger are set to form the goalkeeping trio next season.

Although, only one thing is clear in Leipzig…
