ATP Houston: Incredible series of wrong decisions enrages Steven Diez

It is difficult, if not impossible, to understand how the referee could have made such a series of wrong decisions.

“As you can see in the video, I won the match with a passing shot,” Diez wrote on Instagram.

The game would actually have been over at this point 6: 4, 6: 4 in favor of the 31-year-old. Referee Adel Borghei saw things differently – and got off his chair.

Diez told Instagram how it went on. “After I celebrated and wanted to shake my opponent’s hand, the referee decided to check the mark when the game was clearly over and it was far too late to mark the ball. That was his first big mistake,” complained the world number one -292.

Referee makes several mistakes

“The second mistake was that he marked a ball that was literally a meter from the real mark,” said Diez. But that’s not all.

The third error followed directly. “He asks the linesman if he has the mark. The linesman clearly points to the mark and yet he sticks to his wrong mark,” said Diez.

The video images of the scene suggest that Diez is right in his criticism. But nothing helped him.

On the contrary: the Canadian had to continue the game and left the field as the loser 6:4, 5:7, 2:6. “Something happened to me today that is difficult to put into words,” Diez was stunned.

And yet the story had a happy ending. Diez moved into the main draw as a lucky loser. But then there was – finally – the end of the line. It was a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Jordan Thompson of Australia.
