Àlex Corretja exclusively: “Novak Djokovic needs ten to twelve matches on clay”

Novak Djokovic has played five games this season. Because he did not have a vaccination against the corona virus, the Serb missed the Australian Open and the competitions in Indian Wells and Miami.

Àlex Corretja emphasized in an interview with Eurosport that not even an exceptional player like Djokovic could compensate for the lack of match practice. “Novak – like any other professional – needs time. Even if he wasn’t injured, he still lacks the rhythm. He needs those moments again where he has breakball against him and has to decide how to serve at that moment”, specifies the 48-year-old, who was in the final of the French Open twice in 1998 and 2001.

At the first appearance in Belgrade, Djokovic was heavily challenged in this regard.

Wimbledon

Officially: Medvedev, Sabalenka and Co. excluded from Wimbledon

In the difficult 2: 6, 7: 6 (8: 6), 7: 6 (6: 4) win against Laslo Djere, the number one in the world had breakball twelve times and had to give up his service four times. Miomir Kecmanovic is now waiting in the quarter-finals (today from 4:00 p.m. in live scoring on Eurosport.de).

For Djokovic it is now a matter of focusing on the physical strain, explains Corretja. “Novak has to endure the feeling that his heart is pounding out – and then recover quickly. He will have to make a lot of physical effort to strengthen his legs. On clay it depends a lot on the sliding, rallies of maybe 30 to 40 shots are the order of the day.”

Green light from Rome for Djokovic

After all, Djokovic had positive news from Rome. Despite the lack of vaccination, the 20-time Grand Slam tournament winner is allowed to compete at the Masters in the eternal city, as confirmed by the President of the Italian Tennis Association, Angelo Binaghi.

An extremely important stage on the road to Roland-Garros. And yet it will not be easy for the industry leader to get the ten to twelve games Corretja demands by then.
