Cuba will attend the Pan American Championship in Peru with 18 judokas

Havana, Mar 29 (EFE) .- Cuba will participate with 18 judokas in the Pan American and Oceania championship, scheduled for Lima (Peru), from April 15 to 17, sports media from the island reported on Tuesday.

The Cuban representatives are among the 237 athletes from 25 nations from two continents registered for the contest, according to the International Judo Federation on its official website.

In the men’s category, the island roster is made up of Julio Delgado (60 kilograms), Orlando Polanco (66), Magdiel Estrada (73), Héctor San Román (73), Yasel Baeza (81), Iván Silva (90), Liester Cardona (100) and Andy Granda (over 100) and Danny Porte (60).

The Caribbean team will go to the Peruvian capital with the judokas Melissa Hurtado (52 kilos), Arnaes Odelín (57), Idelannis Gómez (70), Thalía Nariño (+78), Vanesa Godínez (48), Thailen Castillo (63), Yusmari Reyes (63), Madelines Gorguet (78) and Naomis Elizardo (+78).

The Olympic champion Idalys Ortiz (+78), and the world medalist Kaliema Antomarchi (78) and the Pan American titleholder Maylin del Toro (63) will be absent from this selection, because they are not in top shape to face that commitment, according to explained the national commissioner of the specialty, Rafael Manso.

Before the Lima event, the Cuban teams will participate in the Antalya Grand Slam, Turkey (April 1-3), and in the island’s national championship (April 1-10).

Strong rosters from Brazil and Canada are expected to attend the Pan American judo contest, while teams from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa have entered from Oceania. EFE
