Billions in debt: FC Barcelona exceeds spending limit by 144 million euros

DAccording to the Spanish league, the highly indebted FC Barcelona is currently 144 million euros above the permitted spending limit. “This number comes from the difference between the club’s actual losses and those estimated by La Liga in May 2021,” La Liga director general Javier Gómez said on Monday, according to Mundo Deportivo. “Barcelona’s losses are greater than its ability to generate revenue,” the manager added.

According to the league, FC Barcelona is the only top division club to exceed its spending limit on players. Each Spanish club has a different spending limit depending on the income to expenditure ratio and liabilities. FC Barcelona has accumulated horrendous debts of around 1.35 billion euros.

Gómez therefore currently considers the signing of BVB star striker Erling Haaland, which FC Barcelona is aiming for, to be impossible. “It is very clear that in order to make purchases, the club must reduce its expenses or generate more income,” said Gómez.

According to media reports, Haaland and his advisor Mino Raiola also have offers from Real Madrid and Manchester City.
