Master Corporal Ella Archie of the Aklavik Canadian Ranger Patrol was appointed a Member of the Order of Military Merit on January 26, 2022.

This distinction was created on July 1, 1972. It recognizes the exceptional service of members of the Regular and Reserve Forces of the Canadian Armed Forces.

“This award means a lot to me. I couldn’t have done it without the great Ranger instructors I’ve worked with over the years or my fellow Rangers and JCRs across Canada,” reads the 14 November press release. February 2022.

Master Corporal Archie began working for the Junior Canadian Rangers (JCR) in 2004 and became JCR Aklavik Chief in 2014. It is her dedication and work across the various northern communities to help in developing programs that are recognized today.

The JCR program is for young people in remote communities across the country and includes three training circles. Ranger skills such as first aid training, safe use of firearms, and life skills are also taught through community engagement and civic life. Finally, traditional skills are transmitted according to the culture and history of the region. The acquisition of these traditional skills includes learning traditional games or traditional hunting and fishing methods such as archery.
