Pickleball, the sport that causes a sensation, arrives in Santa Marta

Santa Marta de Tormes is one of the pioneer municipalities in hosting pickleball, one of the most innovative sports proposals to promote physical exercise among the residents of the municipality. It is a racket discipline that combines elements of paddle tennis, tennis, badminton and ping pong and that, due to its characteristics, is suitable for all ages and physical conditions. A sport originating in the United States and that Santamartinos will be able to discover first-hand on Saturday, thanks to an open day that will be held in the closed fronton.

“We continue to expand the sports offer in order to reach more and more people, and this time we do it with pickleball, which is causing a sensation in many countries. Our idea is to be able to become a reference in this discipline that can be played as a family, since it is very easy to learn, so it can be said that it is an inclusive sport”, said the Councilor for Sports, Silvia González.

The Salamanca Pickleball Association, chaired by José Luis Revilla, and the Santa Marta City Council, have launched this event that will be divided into three shifts: from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Registration and reservation of places can be done through whatsapp 644 130 517, or through the email [email protected]

Pickleball can be played individually or in pairs and the equipment required is quite simple. Specific solid paddles are needed that can be made of wood or other material, as well as a perforated plastic ball and a net. The fact that the ball is perforated makes it go slower, which allows for longer rallies, making tactics and strategy more important than strength, contrary to what happens with other racket sports, where the condition physics is essential.

“We bet on this discipline with the mind set on having a great tour in Santa Marta. Once the reception among the neighbors is evaluated, we do not rule out the creation of new spaces for the practice of this sport in our municipality”, concluded the person in charge of the area, Silvia González.
