Gonzalo Rubio, champion in stage 8 of the Professional Golf Tour

In an emotional finale, the native of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Gonzalo Rubio won stage 8 of the 2021-22 season of the Professional Golf Tour that took place at Club Campestre El Campanario and was valid for the PGA DevSeries Latin America Tour.

With a birdie on the 18th hole, 28-year-old Gonzalo Rubio finished with a score of 206 strokes, ten under par, one less than Guatemalan José Toledo, who up to the 14th hole was two strokes ahead and who ended his participation in Querétaro with a card of 71 shots (207, -9).

“I felt very good, it was a very windy, cloudy and somewhat cold day. I hit very good shots, almost didn’t miss putts. Thanks to perseverance and continuing to insist I was able to catch up with José Toledo and thanks to the birdie on minute 18 I took the win”, commented Gonzalo Rubio.

“From the beginning I knew that I had to catch up with José Toledo, who is a great player and rarely makes mistakes, I was close there and I did not detach myself from him and well, the horse that reaches wins,” added Rubio, winner of the stage in Bosque Real in the 2018-19 season.

For his part, José Toledo, leader of the ranking and champion of the stages of Puebla, Monterrey and San Miguel de Allende in the current campaign, commented: “I started very well, around 14 I got two ahead, with the wind the greens they got faster, I’m very aggressive with the putter and the truth is I couldn’t be that much now with the speed of the greens, even so I’m happy with second place, I’m still scoring points”.

Mexicans Fernando Arzate and Isidro Benítez were tied for third place with a score of 208 strokes, eight under par, while Rodolfo Cazaubón from Tamaulipas came in fifth place with 209, seven less.

best amateur

The representative of the Mexican Golf Federation, Juan Manuel Martínez, was the best amateur in the competition, finishing tied for the top ten with a score of 212, four under par. Thanks to this performance, the 16-year-old from Veracruz received an invitation to play stage 9 to be held from March 8 to 12 at the Puebla Country Club.

On this occasion, players and representatives of the Professional Golf Tour went to the community of Lomas de Zaragoza in the Municipality of Corregidora, Querétaro, where they delivered pantries and blankets that will benefit 25 families.
