After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the World Football Association took action: Russia is no longer allowed to play with immediate effect.

The world football association FIFA and the European continental association UEFA have excluded Russia from all competitions until further notice. Both associations officially announced this on Monday. This was in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

FIFA initially found it difficult to impose specific sanctions on the 2018 World Cup hosts. However, public pressure has increased in the past few days, so that the decision has now followed.

World Cup out for Russia

This now has a direct impact on the Russian national team, which will be excluded from the 2022 World Cup as there will be no play-off game between Russia and Poland on March 24th.

Poland, like England, Sweden and the Czech Republic, among others, had previously declared that they would not play Russia.

In addition, UEFA announced the end of its cooperation with major sponsor Gazprom. The sponsorship of the Russian energy giant has already been one of the central points in the past few days, and second division side Schalke 04 also parted ways prematurely with their most important sponsor.
