STORY – The prison which hosted the French international and through which former OM player Joey Barton passed, is often portrayed as one of the most violent in the country.

In recent days, Benjamin Mendy has been one of the 750 individuals imprisoned at HM Prison in Manchester. A high-security establishment better known in England as the Strangeways, a name abandoned after a series of historic riots in 1990 that rocked the country. Accused of seven rapes, the French international had been detained since the end of August in a prison located in Liverpool before being transferred on December 23 for security reasons. His trial does not begin before the end of June, the 27-year-old is expected to stay for long weeks in this prison classified in category “A”, while the previous one was listed “B”, intended for prisoners judged at lower risk (the judge could also grant him bail after a new preliminary hearing on January 7).

Across the Channel, the establishment enjoys a very dark reputation even if it has improved in the 21st century …
