In front of the only 2,000 spectators allowed due to Corona, HSV was overwhelmingly superior at first, but was suddenly behind. In the second half, coach Tim Walter’s side were suddenly transformed, having fewer chances but being callous in front of goal. The Kiezkickers couldn’t think of much after the second goal. It was their fourth winless second division game in a row. As early as Saturday, pursuers Darmstadt 98 could overtake them at the top of the table – a draw at bottom of the table Ingolstadt would be enough for that. HSV – still unbeaten at home – has come close to the duo.
“HSV played clean football. We lacked the last penetrating power,” said St. Pauli goal scorer Guido Burgstaller. “If you lead 1-0 and still lose the game, you’re very disappointed.”

It was an intense derby. In the end there were seven yellow cards – four for St. Pauli. Walter saw yellow at HSV just like Sonny Kittel. It was the fifth for the playmaker. The top scorer will miss the game in Darmstadt in two weeks.
HSV superior, but only St. Pauli meets
The St. Pauli defense, which was so strong in the cup against Borussia Dortmund (2-1) and again featured James Lawrence instead of captain Philipp Ziereis, was initially completely overwhelmed. Farid Alidou should have made it 1-0 in the third minute. HSV’s left winger was completely free from ten meters, but shot well over it. Three minutes later, Moritz Heyer headed the ball against the post. And again just four pointer turns later, a shot from Miro Muheim, which was still slightly deflected, rushed centimeters over the goal.
The fact that the derby was so one-sided in the first 15 minutes was just as remarkable as the 0-0 lead despite these three top-class HSV players. On the other hand, the home side only lived up to their reputation as the league’s death chance.

After the Kiezkicker’s first shot at the HSV goal (Burgstaller/16′), Bakery Jatta’s header was only centimeters away from the lead (19′). And then all of a sudden the St. Paulians were celebrating: After a standard situation, the ball came through Etienne Amenyido to Burgstaller, who only had to turn his head to make it 1-0 (30′). 200 brown and white fans cheered the Austrian’s 15th goal of the season. HSV had to regroup first, but almost equalized in the 45th minute with a header from Mario Vuskovic. Guest goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj made a strong save.
Schonlau and Jatta let HSV cheer
At the beginning of the second half the game was open. Ludovit Reis had the first chance for the hosts (48′), on the other side Burgstaller spoke up again (57′). And suddenly it was 1:1. After a corner, HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau won the header duel against Lawrence and gave Vasilj no chance to defend himself (58th). A minute later, the Bosnian keeper made a save against Alidou, who was probably offside anyway.

Bakery Jatta’s speed was ultimately the key to the 2-1. The Gambier received a pass from Kittel and sunk the ball with a powerful shot in the far post (70′). Although HSV (win on penalties at 1. FC Köln) had 30 more minutes in the cup than their opponents, they hardly allowed anything in the final phase. Burgstaller (81st) and Max Dittgen (90th + 5) tested goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes. That was it already. The hosts celebrated a deserved victory. It was the first derby threesome in almost three years and five unsuccessful attempts.
