Christèle Vialis, volunteer, ASM Judo continental referee

Interview by Emma from Onde Carriere

I invite all athletes to take an interest in refereeing, because it is really something that makes us know our sport 100%

The discovery of arbitration

ASM is a very active club in terms of refereeing. When Christelle Vialis started judo, practically all of her teachers did refereeing. She was therefore also interested in it and began to referee small fights.

The more we referee, the more we progress and the more it is a pleasure to referee fights because we are at the center of the fight, finally

At each competition, the referee is evaluated, which allows progress. But not all referees can reach the international level, like athletes.

Referee attire in judo

  • dark pants
  • dark socks on the carpet
  • a navy blue referee jacket, usually
  • a tie: at national level, the tie is yellow and at international level, it is blue
  • a white shirt

The advantage of being a referee when you are sporty according to Christelle Vialis

Being a referee allows you to know the rules by heart and get to know them well. I have to admit that when I was a competitor, I won fights, but because I knew refereeing really well and at certain points in the fight, I said to myself: “ah there if you continue, you will be penalized ,” so hop, I made a small attack and suddenly, I was not penalized. Knowing the finality and finesse of arbitration allows you to win some fights.

referee in sports

It’s something essential because without a referee there is no competition

According to Christelle Vialis, referees are unloved and poorly known. The federations also do not help their referees enough, especially in team sports. Referees are somewhat isolated when an incorrect event occurs. “All the federations have in their regulations things, weapons so that this does not happen”. Young people therefore find it difficult to take the plunge and become for fear of being insulted.

We are lucky in judo to still have the respect of the teacher and the respect of the referee. I never felt this bad role.

The referee is there to accompany the athletes and help them decide who will win. But it’s always the fighters who decide who will win!

The 110 years of ASM Omnisports as seen by Christelle Vialis

110 years, I mean wow! The 110 years is to show young people that here is to invest in a club, it is humanly very positive. We learn to have friends, we progress together. We learn volunteering which is very important in life. I arrived at the age of 7 and I never left because I found my… well, it’s my second family, I found friends, I found friends. It keeps me going. And as a woman and as an athlete and as a license holder.
