“Cannot be tolerated”: BVB boss Zorc on Zwayer’s death threats – Bundesliga

After dubious decisions in the Bundesliga top game between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich (2: 3) last December, referee Felix Zwayer (40) came under heavy criticism – and even in the firing line of some fans. The result was insults and hostilities. It even culminated in death threats that the Berliner and his family received.

BVB shows no understanding for this development. “I find that disgusting and in no way to be tolerated or justified,” said sports director Michael Zorc (59) before Dortmund’s cup defeat at FC St. Pauli (1: 2) on the “Sky” microphone.

For the BVB boss, these insults are “unfortunately in the spirit of the times at the moment”. It has recently been seen “also among politicians and even virologists” who “simply gave their scientific opinion, which may not suit some people.” The Internet is “an anonymous forum that provides a space for such expressions of opinion and idiotic abuse,” Zorc continued.

Referee Zwayer is currently not used. BVB star Jude Bellingham (18) in particular had severely criticized the referee after the game against Bayern, accusing him of manipulating the game. Zwayer rated the Bellingham statements as “denigrating and disrespectful” and called for a dialogue with the player and the club.

BVB is still ready for this. “We expressed our disappointment with Felix Zwayer’s performance at the time,” said Zorc. “We as Borussia Dortmund would always be available for a conversation, that’s clear.”
