Lois Openda sends Vitesse to Dutch Cup quarter-finals

Lois Openda and his club Vitesse Arnhem qualified for the quarter-finals of the Dutch Cup on Tuesday.

Thanks to an assist and a goal from the Devil, Vitesse won 2-0 against DVS ’33 Ermelo, third division team. Lined up from the start, the player on loan from Club Brugge allowed his team to take the lead after just over 20 minutes. Following a fine individual action, he served Daan Huisman who placed the leather out of reach of the visitor goalkeeper (22nd, 1-0). From a smuggler, the striker turned scorer by scoring his team’s second goal to definitively validate qualification before the hour mark (57th, 2-0).

Dortmund, holder of the trophy, say goodbye to the Cup, Witsel scores against his camp

Defending champion, Borussia Dortmund, with its three Belgians at kick-off, was knocked out in the round of 16 of the German Cup by FC Saint Pauli. The BVB lost 2-1 on Tuesday evening on the lawn of the leader of the German second division because, in particular, of an own goal from Axel Witsel. Trap match par excellence, this trip to the first of the Bundesliga 2 took only 4 minutes to settle. Etienne Amenyido was in the right place to give Saint-Pauli the lead and put his team in charge (4th, 1-0).

A few minutes before half-time, Axel Witsel deceived his own goalkeeper by wanting to intervene on a cross. Instead of warding off the danger, he accidentally sent the ball into his net (40th, 2-0).

The ‘Borussen’ reduced the score in the second half on a penalty by the inevitable Erling Haaland (58th, 1-2), but did not manage to catch up.

Thorgan Hazard remained on the pitch for 65 minutes and Witsel was replaced in stoppage time. Thomas Meunier did not leave the field. With this defeat, Dortmund, winner last year, says goodbye to its trophy.

Chelsea and Lukaku lose feathers, De Winter and Juventus advance to the Italian Cup

With Lukaku for 80 minutes, Chelsea could not do better than a 1-1 tie on Tuesday night against Brighton and Leandro Trossard in the 24th day of the Premier League. With this result, the ‘Blues’ are in 3rd place with 44 points, 12 lengths behind Manchester City, who have one less game. For its part, Brighton ranks 9th with 29 units. Everything had however started well for the men of Thomas Tuchel, since Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring shortly before the half-hour (28th, 0-1). A lead that was to melt after a quarter of an hour in the second half, when Adam Webster deceived Kepa Arrizabalaga to bring the two teams tied (60th, 1-1). Leandro Trossard appeared on the pitch in stride, unlike Romelu Lukaku who gave up his place ten minutes from time.

Meanwhile, in Italy, Juventus Turin won 4-1 at home to Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia Round of 16. Koni De Winter hasn’t left the substitutes’ bench. Juan Cuadrado (25th), Daniele Rugani (52nd), Paulo Dybala (67th) and Alvaro Morata (77th) allowed the ‘Old Lady’ to win. Andrea Conti (63rd) saved the honor for the ‘Samp’.

With Landry Dimata on the bench, Espanyol snatch a draw in stoppage time in Cadiz

While Landry Dimata remained on the bench the whole match, Espanyol de Barcelona shared 2 goals everywhere in Cadiz on behalf of the 21st day of the Spanish championship on Tuesday. If Morlanes opened the scoring in the 10th minute for Espanyol, Cadiz equalized through Negredo in the 55th. Negredo thought he had given the victory to his colors, but his goal in the 80th was canceled by the VAR. It was Alejo who then thought he had done it in stoppage time (2-1, 90 + 1), but five minutes later Raul de Tomas obtained the equalizer for Espanyol (2-2, 90 + 6).

The Catalans remain in the soft underbelly of the classification, in 11th place with 26 units. Cadiz takes a point but remains in relegation position, 19th and penultimate with 15 units.
