Asturian Ricardo Hevia, basketball legend, dies

Goodbye to a basketball legend. Ricardo Hevia, born in Mieres in 1940, died this Saturday in Lugo at the age of 81. The former coach had been hospitalized for several days after an operation.

Hevia was a national basketball legend and a pioneer in the sport of the basket in Asturias, who came to direct in the ACB. He had been living in Galicia for years and it was there that he made a name for himself as a coach. Among other teams, he directed Breogan, Ferrol, Murcia, Basketball Salamanca, Gijón Baloncesto or Trahedi Oviedo. The basket was his life.

The Breogan was one of his fetish teams, where he arrived more than thirty years ago. At present, Hevia lived precisely in Lugo, although her predilection for Asturias always stood out. Five years ago, the Association of Spanish Trainers awarded him the “Raimundo Saporta” award in Oviedo, at the Pumarín sports center, for a unique career and Hevia valued it in an interview with LA NUEVA ESPAÑA.

“Since I started 60 years ago playing next to the Santa Clara barracks, I have not skipped any station or taken any shortcut. I am an artisan professional, which I have done with my ass glued to the bench, directing teams until I reached the ACB. The most you learn is by competing with other high-level coaches, and I was lucky enough to face great coaches and I had no choice but to learn. I think this award is given to me for my career, for spending a lifetime, rather than for winning titles. ”
