A major accomplishment for Maxime Tétreault

BADMINTON. 2021 was a year of great achievement for badminton player Maxime Tétreault.

Thanks to a brilliant performance in men’s doubles in Brazil, when he was part of the Canadian delegation that won the gold medal at the Pan American team championship, the 31-year-old Drummondville earned a pass to the Thomas Cup. held in Denmark. Postponed twice due to the pandemic, this world team championship was finally held last fall.

The world’s badminton elite were therefore at the rendezvous in Aarhus, while the 16 qualified countries were divided into four groups. Canada was to face Japan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

Despite their best efforts, the Canadians failed to advance to the quarter-finals, losing 4-1 to the Japanese and 5-0 to the Malaysians before forfeiting the British. The gold medal went to Indonesia, who beat China in the final.

The first Drummondville resident to qualify for this competition, Maxime Tétreault formed a duo with Montrealer Philippe Charron. For the two former color bearers of the Université de Montréal Carabins, it was an extraordinary experience to compete against players of this exceptional quality, some of their opponents being among the top 20 in the world rankings.
