Tokyo-2021 Olympic Games
PScheduled for summer 2020, before being postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tokyo Olympic Games have once again confirmed the decline of Algerian sport on an international scale. Indeed, for its 14e Following participation in the Olympics (except for the Munich-1976 Olympics following the boycott of African nations, editor’s note), Algeria returned empty-handed from Tokyo, despite a strong presence with 44 athletes in 14 disciplines.
Remaining on a gold medal during the Olympics-2012 in London and two silver in the Olympics-2016 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the Algerians relied heavily on the Tokyo-2021 edition to make a better harvest. With 44 athletes in 14 disciplines with potential contenders in disciplines such as athletics, judo and boxing which had offered medals to Algeria, or even karate which made its debut in Tokyo for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, the hope of winning some charms was high. But the reality on the ground was different, with not only a failed participation with 0 medals, but a wholesale, early and inglorious elimination of all athletes and in all disciplines from the first days of competitions and the first rounds.
The Olympics-2021 which sign one of the worst participations of Algeria in the games, where Algeria has almost won at least one medal since the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 2012.
If Algeria’s participation in the Tokyo Olympics was a total failure, it above all denotes the decline of Algerian sport for two decades and the record harvest of the 2000 edition in Sidney (Australia) with five medals (1 gold , 1 silver and 3 bronzes). Since these Olympics, Algeria has collected only three new medals in the five editions that have followed all the work of a single athlete: TaoufikMekhloufi (1 gold in 2012 and 2 silver in 2016).
In fact, the 800m and 1500m champion saved face in Algerian sport, but was in fact only the tree that hides the forest, masking with his two medals the decadence of Algerian sport. It was also enough that Mekhloufi, almost the only real hope for an Algerian medal, forfeit the Tokyo Olympics, for us to discover, amazed, that Algerian sport is no longer able to shine in the concert of nations.
A black year 2021 for Algerian sport, and which calls on all its players to review their strategy, in the hope of restoring the image tarnished by two decades of famine.
