USA: Las Vegas favorite location for new soccer club

Las Vegas could soon get another professional franchise after the Golden Knights ice hockey club and the Raiders football team. As league boss Don Garber said before the final of the Major League Soccer (MLS) league on Saturday, the player’s paradise in the state of Nevada is the favorite location for the 30th team. “We are excited about the market,” he said.

The Californian capital Sacramento had originally received a firm commitment for an MLS club from 2023, after the withdrawal of major investor Ron Burkle, co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL ice hockey league, a new location is now to be found. The MLS obviously favors Las Vegas, which had already applied for a franchise in 2017.

Las Vegas only became a newcomer to the NHL location for a franchise from one of the major professional sports leagues in North America in 2017 with the Golden Knights. In 2020, the NFL club Raiders, previously based in Oakland, California, was added. The city is also seen as a potential new home for the Oakland A’s baseball team, whose move has continued to be speculated about.

The MLS final will take place on Saturday. The Portland Timbers receive New York City FC.
