What you missed that night in NBA and NHL
Düsseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are busy. What happened that night in American football, basketball and ice hockey. Today among other things: Draisaitl scores in the anniversary game – but loses.
Ice hockey: Grubauer wins German duel against Draisaitl
The German ice hockey superstar Leon Draisaitl lost the duel with national goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer in his 500th NHL game. Grubauer’s Seattle Kraken surprisingly defeated Draisaitl’s Edmonton Oilers 4: 3 (2: 1, 2: 1, 0: 1) in the North American professional league on Friday evening (local time).
Draisaitl scored the interim 1: 1 equalizer in his anniversary game with his 21st goal in the 22nd game of the season. It was also his eleventh power play goal of the season. Both are currently the top scores in the world’s best ice hockey league. In the final third, the 26-year-old also gave the template for the subsequent goal.
On the other side, Grubauer parried 29 shots at his goal. After their third home win in a row, the Kraken left last place in the Pacific Division, Edmonton is in second place in the same division.
Draisaitl, 2020 best scorer and most valuable player in the NHL as well as Germany’s Sportsman of the Year, has 220 goals and 329 assists in his 500 regular season games for the Edmonton Oilers.
Basketball: Lakers lose city duel
The Los Angeles Clippers have won the first city duel against the Lakers of the current NBA season. The German national basketball player Isaiah Hartenstein contributed eleven points to the 119: 115 success on Friday evening (local time) in just under 16 minutes of play. Superstar LeBron James scored 23 points for the Lakers when he returned to the North American professional league’s Corona list after a short time.
Things went worse for the other Germans in the best basketball league in the world on Friday than for Hartenstein. Dennis Schröder suffered a 130-137 defeat at the Utah Jazz despite 26 points with the Boston Celtics in a spectacular game.
Franz and Moritz Wagner lost 116: 118 at the Houston Rockets. Franz Wagner got 17 points as well as five rebounds and assists, his brother Moritz scored five points from the bench. Houston, in which Daniel Theis was not used, is currently the most successful team in the league with five wins in a row, after the Texans only won one of the first 17 games at the start of the season.
The fact that Houston now has the longest winning streak in the league is due to the loss of the Phoenix Suns in the top game at the Golden State Warriors. The 96: 118 defeat was the first for the Suns after 18 successes.
The Dallas Mavericks received a surprising home defeat against the New Orleans Pelicans. At 91: 107 Maxi Kleber, who started for the ailing Kristaps Porzingis, was still one of the best players of the disappointing Mavs with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Basketball: Portland throws CEOs out for bullying
The Portland Trail Blazers have sacked their CEO, Neil Olshey, with immediate effect following allegations of bullying. The NBA club announced on Friday (local time). This was preceded by an independent investigation after several US media reported misconduct by the 56-year-old in November. The Trail Blazers justified the separation in a message with violations of Olshey’s code of conduct of the club. Club President Chris McGowan resigned a month ago.
Olshey joined the Trail Blazers nine years ago from the Los Angeles Clippers. With him as General Manager, Portland had reached the playoffs eight times in a row, currently the longest series in the league. Star player Damian Lillard’s team is currently eighth in the Western Conference with eleven wins after 23 games.
They are now “confident that the changes will help create a more positive and respectful work environment,” wrote the club. On a temporary basis, Joe Cronin will be promoted to General Manager.
