Two weeks after the occupation: “Incredible success” – homeless people moved into an empty house in Berlin-Mitte – Berlin

Almost two weeks after the occupation of a residential building on Habersaathstrasse in Mitte, the first homeless and homeless people moved into the vacant apartments on December 30th. This was announced by the activists of the “Leerstand-Hab-Ich-Saath” initiative on Twitter on Friday. The first of the 60 residents have moved into apartments, and the rest of the people will follow in the next few days. According to the activist, it was a “very emotional situation”.

Shortly before Christmas, District Mayor Stephan von Dassel (Greens) announced on Twitter that there were fire protection problems that had to be resolved before moving in. Therefore it was not possible for the homeless to move into the apartments before the Christmas holidays.

As a result, the activists of the “Leerstand-Hab-Ich-Saath” initiative, according to their own statements, had smoke detectors and fire extinguishers professionally installed – these were financed by donations. Von Dassel then arranged for the homeless people to be instructed by the social welfare office. A total of 54 apartments are to be moved into.

“We have achieved an incredible success and created living space for people who are otherwise only fobbed off with emergency sleeping places and soup kitchens,” said the activists: inside.

Together with the activists, homeless people occupied the house in Habersaathstrasse two weeks ago, in which around 100 apartments have been vacant for years. The owner would like to tear down the residential block and replace it with high-quality new buildings, but according to von Dassel an “agreement” could be reached with the owner according to which the homeless can temporarily live in the house.
