“The big goal is the Hawaii World Cup in two years”

– It has been a pretty good season, and with positive results. I would highlight the double fifth place in the European Championship in mixed double with Nikol Carulla and in teams, after losing 3-2 against France. Then I was champion of Spain in the mixed doubles U-17 and double runner-up of Spain in U-19 and Junior, both in men’s doubles, with Javier Álava, and in the mixed with Nikol.

– That experience in the European would be nice.

– This was my second European. This time he played in Slovenia and the truth is that it was amazing. We compete with people of great level and we saw that we are not that far from the Danes or the French. A few years ago it would be impossible. We lost in the end to the French in a third set and by two points. That was what separated us from a medal. That is something that nobody counted on.

– Why did you end up opting for that specialization in doubles?

-Since childhood, with my father, we always promoted the doubles a lot and we saw that it gave us results. We have not done badly. However, starting this season I will play more individually. In the last Spanish championship I already played singles and lost in the quarterfinals. The objectives this year will be to fight for the victory in the mixed doubles and in the singles. This will be my first year in the junior category and we have the European Championship in Serbia and the World Championship in Santander. In the European we will try to find the classification in the three modalities, individual, doubles and mixed.

– I believe, however, that first it is necessary to overcome an injury.

–Yes, now I have to rest a little. On the 23rd I’m going to have an operation for compartment syndrome on my forearm. I will have about four weeks of recovery. Is not that much time. It is important to do it because it is an injury that was forcing me to lower the training load. When it hurts, I can’t do anything. It is a problem that I have to cut now or I will not be able to continue training at this level.

– How about that couple that you formed recently with Nikol Carulla?

– It is giving us very good results and we are going to continue like this. Our great goal together is in 2023, at the World Championship held in Hawaii. There we will be the two juniors of the second year and it is a good opportunity. In 2022 we will be the smallest in the category, but in Hawaii we would be the oldest and I think we could go with the possibility of doing something nice.

“You are ambitious.”

-Dreaming is free. You always have to think big. Let it not be said that we did not try.

“Thanks to my parents I am what I am”

Rodrigo Sanjurjo

– How do you get on being the son of the president of the federation and coach?

-Sometimes it is not easy. In my case I think I have done well but sometimes you have to listen to comments from people who are not pleasant. I think I get along pretty well.

That led him, however, to grow up with a badminton racket in hand.

-It’s true. Thanks to my father I am what I am. If it weren’t for him, none of this would be possible. I would not have accomplished all that I have accomplished. Also my mother, who since I was little was there throwing the flyers at me. I owe a lot to both of you. With your help I have become an almost elite athlete.

–For a time you alternated athletics and badminton, why did you end up opting for badminton?

–When I was younger, badminton gave me more outings at the national level. In athletics he competed on a territorial level, at least up to junior. However, with badminton he was going to compete throughout Spain. That was one of the main reasons I opted for badminton.

– How is your day to day at the Pontevedra Technification Center?

–We train every day. Tuesday and Thursday only in the afternoon and Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning and afternoon. At first it was difficult but now I’m used to it.
