Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev announced this morning that he was positive for COVID-19, becoming the sixth player to participate in the recent exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi to contract the virus.

“I am currently in Barcelona and unfortunately I tested positive for COVID-19. I have minimal symptoms. I am isolated and following all protocols under the supervision of doctors,” Rublev said in a statement on Twitter.

The tennis player recalled that he is “fully vaccinated” against the virus. “I was preparing for the ATP Cup and the Australian Open. Now I have to recover and I will go to Melbourne only when it is safe for everyone,” he added.

Thus, it will be low for the ATP Cup that will be played from Saturday in Sydney, where Russia defends the title. In addition, it is a doubt for the Australian Open, which will begin on January 17.

Spaniard Rafael Nadal, Israeli Denis Shapovalov, US Open champion Emma Raducanu, Olympic champion Belinda Bencic and Ons Jabeur also tested positive in or after Abu Dhabi.
