Ómicron’s impact on the future of sports competitions in Spain is also beginning to cause economic damage. As proposed by the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System From January 1 to January 31, in professional outdoor sports there may only be a maximum of 75% of the public in the stands – up to now it was 10% – while in professional sports in closed areas the capacity will be 50% – until now it was 80% -, a measure that affects ACB and Euroleague matches.

This means that from this weekend the matches of LaLiga and those of the Copa del Rey They will only be able to house three-quarters of all their seats, in a new blow for the professional beautiful sport in our country, undoubtedly the most affected during the pandemic in the matter related to the attendance of spectators.

These new limitations represent a step back after just over two months in which the stadiums have been able to enjoy 100% of the capacity, but this crab step can be even more damaging. It will be the Autonomous communities, as has happened until now, those who have the last word on the total capacity allowed in the First and Second stadiums. The maximum decreed by Health is 75%, but it may be lower. In fact, there are already communities, like the Basque Country, which has set a 50% cap for soccer matches.

The news has not sat too well with the clubs, nor with the employers, who understand that it is a more populist than gimmicky measure. A whole month with these restrictions supposes another bite to the accounts of the clubs, already enough punished during these two years of pandemic. You have to remember that both First What Second division were the last two sports competitions in our country to receive the pertinent permission from the authorities to reopen the doors of their stadiums, something that has happened since mid-August, the date on which the First and Second began. The entire 20-21 season was without an audience in the stands, while the rest of the sports, including non-professional football competitions, were able to welcome spectators in their stands.
