The three winners of the election for athlete of the year 2021 in Schleswig-Holstein have been determined: Frieda Hämmerling, Dominic Ressel and THW Kiel. In addition, the state sports association honored two young athletes.

The year 2021 was exhausting and exciting for the athletes and teams in Schleswig-Holstein. Still affected by the Corona crisis, competitions finally took place again, including the postponed Olympic Games in Tokyo. Rower Frieda Hämmerling, judoka Dominic Ressel and the THW Kiel showed particular strengths. They are the winners of the “Sportsman of the Year” election in 2021, awarded by the Schleswig-Holstein State Sports Association (LSV).

The big LSV gala, with which the sporting year in Schleswig-Holstein traditionally ends, had to be canceled for the second time in a row due to the pandemic. Instead, the LSV selected the winners on Tuesday evening in the “Haus des Sports” in Kiel on a smaller scale.

LSV President: “Top athletes of international stature”

“With Frieda Hämmerling and Dominic Ressel, two top athletes of international stature won the election this year, who duly represented not only the German, but also the Schleswig-Holstein colors at the Olympic Games in Tokyo,” said LSV President Hans-Jakob Tiessen. Hämmerling and Ressel would train for a large part of the year at bases outside Schleswig-Holstein, but showed their ties to their homeland by continuing to start for their home clubs, explained Tiessen.

And with the THW Kiel, which was able to unite the most votes in the election of the best team this year, another figurehead of the sport in Schleswig-Holstein is right at the top of the podium. With a view to all of the nominees for the athlete election, Tiessen added: “They are all excellent ambassadors for sport and role models for the many talented young athletes in our country.”

World Cup winner, Olympic bronze and handball champion

For the third time after 2018 and 2020, the rower Frieda Hämmerling is “Sportswoman of the Year” in Schleswig-Holstein. The overall World Cup winner was perfectly fit at the Olympics. It did not work out with the medal in the quadruple, which was believed to be safe – nevertheless, the 24-year-old from Kiel rowed the best race of her career.

For judoka Dominic Ressel, the Olympic Games were the biggest competition of his career so far. In the individual, he just missed a medal. The 28-year-old from Kiel even won bronze with the mixed team. And after an outstanding performance, THW Kiel won the 22nd championship title in the handball Bundesliga. For the zebras it is the 14th title as “Team of the Year” in Schleswig-Holstein.

Tennis player and sailor are “Newcomer of the year 2021”

Since 2015 there has also been a prize that is awarded to successful young athletes with great potential for success. It is endowed with 1,000 euros. The first winner at the time was Frieda Hämmerling. This year the winners are Philippa Färbe from TC Rot-Weiß Wahlstedt and Ole Schweckendiek from the Kieler Yacht Club.

The 14-year-old tennis player from Kiel won the title of German champion in singles and doubles in the U14 age group this year. She currently occupies second place in the German U14 tennis rankings. This year, the 16-year-old sailor was, among other things, German champion in the laser standard and laser radial. He also won the Kiel Week.

Congratulations from the Minister of the Interior

Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack (CDU) also found words of praise: “I wholeheartedly congratulate all this year’s winners. They have shown outstanding achievements and can rightly be proud of them. As the state government, we want competitive and top-class sport as part of our future plan Continue to support Sportland SH intensively and purposefully so that we can still celebrate many great successes together. “

More voices than ever before

The winners were determined by internet voting and jury voting. Until last Friday, all those interested in sports could participate on ndr.de, and almost 17,000 votes were cast – more than ever before. This result makes up half of the total result. For the other 50 percent, the votes of the chairmen and presidents of the professional associations of the state sports association as well as the members of the Association of Schleswig-Holstein Sports Journalists count. NDR Schleswig-Holstein is the media partner of the LSV athletes election.

A jury made up of LSV representatives and the Association of Schleswig-Holstein Sports Journalists and the Olympic Training Center Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein had previously made a preselection for each of the three categories. There were five athletes and five teams to choose from.
