The federal government and the federal states have agreed that from December 28, “major national events” will take place without an audience. In Berlin, however, the Senate decided that spectators can continue to come.

Dhe Bundesliga clubs Alba Berlin, the BR Volleys or the Eisbären can also play in front of spectators in their home hall after December 28th. The Berlin Senate decided on Thursday to allow up to 3000 spectators outdoors and 2000 spectators indoors from December 28th, as the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) announced after a Senate meeting.

“We have decided to proceed in a measured manner, weighing up the risks and protective measures,” said Giffey. The aim is to maintain activities in culture, sport or business as much as possible, albeit under restricted conditions.

“We have come to the conclusion that this is still better than a complete cancellation.” The federal and state governments agreed on Tuesday that “major national events” must take place without spectators from December 28th at the latest. However, what exactly falls under this term has not been defined.

Events in principle according to 2G-plus rules

The prerequisite is a general hygiene concept specified by the authorities, which provides for at least mechanical ventilation in closed rooms. In addition, such events must generally take place according to 2G-plus rules: They are only open to vaccinated and convalescent people who also have to show a current negative corona test. Wearing an FFP2 mask is also compulsory.

Alba, the Volleys and the Eisbären have some home games after December 28th. The BR Volleys welcomed the measures and are happy to be able to play the top game against the Powervolleys Düren in front of spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle on January 6th. The Füchse Berlin will not play any home games after December 28th, as the league is paused because of the European Handball Championship.
