Hoffenheim Falls Short in Battle for Seventh Place: Unpleasant Discussion with Fans Ensues

TSG Hoffenheim failed to advance in the battle for seventh place. In Bochum, the people of Kraichgau woke up too late. After the game there was an unpleasant discussion with the fans.

With Freiburg and Augsburg, Hoffenheim is in a three-way battle for seventh place in the final phase of the season, which will probably be enough for participation in the Conference League. In Bochum, TSG had the chance to outperform the competition. But the Kraichgauer had no chance for 70 minutes, and Hoffenheim only woke up in the last few minutes.

Andrej Kramaric had made the already decided game exciting again with his brace, but the comeback ultimately came too late. “It’s a shame that we only played football in the last 20 minutes,” said the Croatian angrily, who himself was directly involved in Bochum’s 2-0 win with weak defensive behavior. “We knew exactly what to expect. We knew how Bochum played at home. In the end they deserved to win, that’s clear to say,” said Kramaric DAZN further.

Baumann: “I expect them to switch”

According to Kramaric, Hoffenheim was “not the first team to have problems here”, but Bochum’s overwhelming dominance was still sobering for TSG and their ambitions. These have now spilled back over to the appendix – and they were very frustrated after the final whistle. “The fans were disappointed, which is fine. But I expect them to change somewhere because we were almost relegated last year and are playing a much better round this year. It was a bit emotional. From their side and from ours Page,” Oliver Baumann explained the scenes after the final whistle, when Kramaric, among others, gestured angrily towards the visitors’ block. “99 percent (of fans, Anm. d. Red) don’t understand football, there’s no need to talk. Of course I was a little angry at that moment,” said the double goalscorer.

Ultimately, the entire team followed the curve and there were no further escalations. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo was also disappointed by the defeat. His team did not manage to free themselves from the pressure from Bochum. “They have put us under extreme stress.” According to Hoffenheim’s coach, this also had to do with the fact that “we didn’t hold our own up front and didn’t look for depth too often.” Above all, Maximilian Beier’s pace didn’t bring Matarazzo’s team into the game at all.

So Hoffenheim’s only option on this match day is to be a spectator and hope that the competition also stumbles. Freiburg will play at home against Wolfsburg on Saturday (3:30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker), while Augsburg will host Werder Bremen at the same time.
