With his strong performance on Tuesday evening in Stuttgart, Robert Lewandowski achieved the next record for goalscorer legend Gerd Müller. The Pole has now scored the most league goals in a single calendar year.

Lewandowski was not the most decorated player in the early win of the autumn championship against VfB Stuttgart, but two goals were enough for the goal guarantor to crack the next national record. The 33-year-old scored his Bundesliga goals 41 and 42 that year in Bayern Munich’s 5-0 win at VfB – Müller scored just as many in 1972. Next Friday against VfL Wolfsburg, Lewandowski can further expand the record in the last game of the calendar year.

In the past 2020/21 season, the Polish international had already improved Müller’s fabulous record for Bundesliga goals from 40 to 41 within one season. Müller, who died in August at the age of 75, set his best record in the 1971/72 season.
